2205 STAINLESS STEEL TUBE

2205 stainless steel tube

2205 stainless steel tube is a duplex alloy that blends austenitic and ferritic properties, offering enhanced strength and corrosion resistance. Its composition includes 22%-23% chromium, 3%-3.5% molybdenum, 0.14%-0.2% nitrogen, and 4.5%-6.5% nickel, making it superior to 304 and 316 stainless steels in aggressive environments. Highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking due to its high alloying elements, 2205's duplex structure delivers a yield strength roughly double that of traditional austenitic steels, allowing for lighter-weight designs. Primarily used in the oil and gas, chemical, pollution control, and marine sectors, 2205 stainless steel offers a cost-effective solution for high-stress, corrosive applications.

2205 stainless steel tube FAQ

Duplex stainless steel is called duplex (or austenitic-ferritic) grades because their metallurgical structure consists of two phases, austenite (face-centered cubic lattice) and ferrite (body centered cubic lattice) in roughly equal proportions. They are designed to provide better corrosion resistance, particularly chloride stress corrosion and chloride pitting corrosion, and higher strength.
The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provides superb resistance to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments.
2205 stainless steel has excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking due to its duplex structure (austenitic-ferritic), which offers a combination of high strength and high corrosion resistance.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is a measure of the relative pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steel alloys in chloride-containing environments. The PREN of 2205 is typically between 34 and 36, which is high and indicates very good pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.
2205 duplex stainless steel has higher chromium (22%-23%) and molybdenum (3%-3.5%), but lower nickel (4.5%-6.5%) content than 304/316L, granting it superior corrosion resistance and strength, especially against chloride stress and pitting corrosion. While the cost of 2205 is often perceived as much higher than that of 316L, it typically varies within a narrow margin, generally not exceeding a difference of $3,000 per ton. However, duplex steel's more complex and challenging manufacturing process does make its tube fittings more expensive than those made from 304/316L.
2205 stainless steel tube is magnetic due to its ferrite content.
It is EN 1.4462.
